My life was not important
“My life was not important enough to be recorded.”
“I don’t have stories to preserve.”
“I led an average life. There’s nothing worth telling. No one will be interested anyway.”
These are some of the blocks that keep us from telling and preserving our stories. If we lived for any length of time on this planet, we have had experiences and hence stories to tell.
Memoirs are not about the big themes – love and valour and loss and bravery. Yes, there are the big life experiences like wars and famine, political turmoil and financial disasters. But memoirs are about our experiences – the little things that make up a life. The personal – love and friendships, separation and grief, family traditions and beliefs, meaning drawn from a lifetime.
After we pass on, the only thing we leave behind of ourselves are the stories of our experiences.
There are many reasons why we should preserve our stories. While they may not be of much interest to everyone, everywhere, our life stories would be most interesting to some people. How we lived, our experiences of society, the changes in the geographical, political and religious landscape is something we leave behind for future generations.
Local libraries are full of such treasures that are of immense interest and value to researchers. But most important, these stories would be of tremendous interest to our children and their children. These stories will inform them of where they came from and how they got there.
We all love thumbing through old family albums. But wouldn’t it be so much more exciting if we could put stories to those faces in the family portraits? Who was my grand father beyond that stern looking man in military dress? What’s the story behind that white persian cat next to my great grand-mother? Or that vase on the table in the portrait of my mother that now lies on the mantelpiece?
These are the stories that we cannot afford to lose. Our stories make up humanity. Every life is important and life stories must me recorded.

Life Story / Gasper, this is brilliant! It brings tears to my eyes. Thank you for your patience during the interview. It put me at ease and in the process I was able to recall memories I had forgotten from all those years ago. I wanted to do this work of recording my experiences for many years.
